Evolution of latin music: a history you deserve to understand

Latin music is a cultural gem that has captivated hearts and moved bodies around the world. This musical genre encompasses a rich diversity of styles, rhythms and traditions that reflect the history and heritage of Latin America. From traditional mariachi melodies to vibrant contemporary reggaeton, this gnre has evolved over the centuries, and its impact endures in today’s global music. In this article, we will explore the fascinating history of music and how it has influenced the international music scene.

The latin music history begins at…

Indigenous and European roots

This history can be traced back to the indigenous and European roots that intertwined at the time of the encounter between the Old and New Worlds. Pre-Columbian instruments such as the quena and marimba fused with European influences such as the guitar and violin, giving rise to a new and vibrant sound. This cultural mix became the basis for musical genres such as the Cuban son and the Mexican huapango.

Then, African Influence and Salsa arrrived to stay!

Another crucial influence on this music came from African slavery. African rhythms and percussions were incorporated into music, creating genres such as salsa and cumbia. Salsa, with its origins in New York and Cuba, fused African rhythms with influences from jazz and popular music, creating a genre that still fills dance floors around the world today.

The Rise of Ranchera Music and the Bolero also began to steal hearts…

Throughout the 20th century, Latin music continued to evolve. Ranchera music, with its emphasis on guitar and emotive lyrics, became a symbol of Mexican culture. Iconic figures such as Vicente Fernández and Pedro Infante contributed to the legacy of ranchera music. Simultaneously, the bolero, a romantic genre, gained popularity throughout Latin America. Performers such as Lucho Gatica and Los Panchos captivated audiences with their passionate ballads.

Then came the rise of Salsa and Merengue

In the 1970s, salsa experienced a boom in New York. Figures such as Celia Cruz, Héctor Lavoe and Willie Colón took this genre to new levels of popularity. Salsa incorporates elements of jazz, Cuban son and Caribbean music, making it irresistible to dance to. Meanwhile, in the Dominican Republic, merengue became a musical phenomenon. With its infectious rhythm and festive lyrics, merengue spread internationally.

However, what we want to mention most is the Latin Music Explosion of the 1990s.

The 1990s marked a turning point in the history of Latin music. Genres such as reggaeton, Latin pop and tropical music gained ground. Ricky Martin, Shakira, and Enrique Iglesias became international Latin pop stars, bringing Latin music to non-Spanish speaking audiences around the world. Reggaeton, with its distinctive rhythmic base, emerged in Puerto Rico and quickly became a global phenomenon, with artists such as Daddy Yankee and Don Omar leading the movement.

And what has this timeline become? Nothing less than the 21st Century, where Fusion and Diversity reign

In the 21st century, Latin music continues to evolve and diversify. The fusion of genres has become commonplace, creating new hybrid styles. Reggaeton and Latin trap have merged to create a modern, urban sound, with artists such as Bad Bunny and J Balvin leading this trend. Latin music has also influenced pop music, with successful collaborations between Latin artists and international pop stars.

Latin music is a living testament to Latin America’s cultural richness and global influence. Throughout its history, it has absorbed and fused a wide range of influences, creating a vibrant and diverse musical palette that remains relevant today. From indigenous and European roots to African influence and contemporary trends, Latin music has left an indelible mark on the music world.

Moreover, in the 21st century, the Latin music industry has experienced a renaissance thanks to companies such as Saban Music. This label, founded by legendary producer Haim Saban, has been dedicated to fostering and supporting emerging Latin talent. Saban Music has played a vital role in promoting artists and genres that fuse musical traditions with a modern approach.

It`s influence has been felt in contemporary Latin music, where artists have the freedom to explore and create new sounds that continue to resonate with audiences around the world. In short, Latin music is an ever-evolving phenomenon that celebrates the richness of Latin American cultures and its global impact. michael

Michael Gabriel Reyes Ocando was born on October 10, 1995, in Caracas and feels like the older brother of his groupmates. From a young age, he felt a deep passion for music. From a very young age, he sang songs in the car with his mother and showed a particular affinity for music. Although initially, music was a hobby, over time, Michael understood its influence and power in people’s lives, which intensified his interest. The musical influence also came from his family, with an uncle who was a singer, which further inspired him. About seven years ago, Michael began taking singing lessons to perfect his vocal skills. Despite opportunities in acting, including a leading role in a successful Venezuelan soap opera called “Para Verte Mejor,” his true passion has always been music. Over the last five years, he released several songs, including two tracks in collaboration with the producer George Noriega, known for his work with Ricky Martin and Shakira.

jota g

Juan Guillermo Domínguez Arismendi (Jota G.) was born on December 20, 2001, in Caracas, Venezuela. His journey in music began at the early age of four when he started playing the guitar, bass, piano, and singing. Currently, he is pursuing a career in audio production. Despite spending his childhood in Los Teques, Miranda state, Venezuela, he identifies more with Valencia, Carabobo, where he lived during his adolescence and where his family currently resides. After living in France for almost two years, where he initially planned to study computer and electronic engineering, Juan Guillermo decided to follow his true passion, music and returned to Venezuela. He has been living in Miami for two months now. Despite a brief detour into computer and electronic engineering in France, music has always been an integral part of his life. Ultimately, he realized that music was his true passion and chose to pursue that path.

IGNACIO

Ignacio Adalberto Mendoza Hernández, known as Happy, was born on July 5, 2004, in Lechería, Venezuela. Music was always present in his family from a young age, but it wasn’t until he was 14 that he considered it his vocation when he discovered his passion. From that moment, Ignacio began playing the guitar and producing his own music, falling in love with the creative process. Despite differences with his parents, who urged him to finish school before fully dedicating himself to music, Ignacio officially embarked on his musical career in 2020 in Venezuela, forming a band and performing in various states of his country. Later, he moved to Miami, where his mother had been living for two years, and received a call from Frank, who showed interest in his career and introduced him to the HeyBroders project. Initially, Ignacio was unsure about joining a group, but after understanding the project’s vision, listening to the music, and meeting the other members, he decided to give it a chance.

ANTHONY

Gerald Anthony Arauz Tijerino, also known as G Anthony, was born on January 15, 2002, in Managua, Nicaragua. His musical journey began later compared to some of his peers. Initially, he focused on composition and writing, creating poems in school and experimenting with rap with friends and siblings. Over time, his interest in music grew, and he found it a form of expression and peace. Anthony played a crucial role in the inception of the “Hey Broders” project by presenting a song called “Relación” to the producers. From there, the project’s story began to take shape, with the idea of creating a fresh and unique cumbia group in the genre. He arrived in Miami about a year ago, in November, after living in Las Vegas. His move to Miami was driven by the opportunity and potential of the musical project that was taking shape in the city.
